Introduction
A NEW CONCEPT FOR THE TREATMENT OF BABIES

Presently in the health care system, if a fetus is judged to be viable and is in distress, a Cesarean section is performed and the fetus is birthed and handled as a premature baby. That is, it is forced to breathe and function as if it were a full term baby when, in fact, the lungs and many of the internal organs are not developed sufficiently to maintain life without significant assistance. As a result, many extraordinary means are utilized to maintain and develop life. These means lead to a variety of complications during the initial growth phase as well as later in life.

The following paper presents an alternate method which could save much heartache and deliver healthy babies. It was initially proposed approximately two years ago (3/2001) with doctors showing interest but not being able to spend the time necessary to assist in the development. Approximately one year ago, there was an editorial in the LA Times, concerning an off shore program at a university in Tokyo targeted toward an artificial means of developing embryos. As an aside, it reported that students at the university had kept a mammal alive for over three weeks using a similar technique.

The concept is presented for review, critique, and to solicit comments and suggestions for further development and possible implementation.
